Nine days is the number most parents land on when asked. It is remarkably consistent, and it is not a coincidence — a chart tends to fail for structural reasons, on roughly the same schedule, regardless of the child.

The one nobody expects: it worked
The fourth reason is the interesting one, because it looks exactly like failure and is the opposite.
You built the chart in September around the thing that was hardest — getting out of the door, or homework, or hands to yourself. By November that thing is mostly solved. The button is still there, still being tapped, still paying out, and it now measures nothing. The signal has rotted, and a chart that pays for things a child finds easy stops carrying any information for either of you.
The instinct is to add more buttons. The better move is to retire that one and say why: you just do this now, all by yourself. Then pick what is hard next. A chart that never changes is a chart that stopped being about your child some time ago.
How to tell which one you have
- They stopped caring suddenly, after a bad day — it could be lost.
- They cashed out fast and lost interest — the prize was too cheap.
- They kept asking and the total kept not moving — the prize was too far away.
- You are the one who stopped — it needed less of you, not more of them.
- They still tap it happily and nothing is changing — it worked, and it is time to move it.
Only the middle two are about pricing, and none of the five is about a child lacking motivation — which is the conclusion most of us reach first, and the one the chart's own design usually earned on its behalf.
